More Important Than a WIP
The high school where I work has been shut down. It should not have been but it was. We have educated students, worked with their parents, seen them graduate. We are bereft.
Now it is left to us to close the office down. Besides all the paperwork, there are boxes everywhere, and memories. Today I found a bag, behind a cabinet, and inside the bag was a jumble of lanyards, imprinted with the school name.
I actually always found them to be somewhat scratchy and unpleasant to wear, to be perfectly honest; however, today I found them to be another reminder of what we are losing. And an idea immediately popped in my head. I should cover these lanyards with fabric for my fellow staff members, so that they could keep them and wear them (incognito) wherever they went!
Now I love selvedges. I mean, doesn't everyone? All that color, the writing, the dots, just everything! Selvedges hold all your fabric neatly together until you cut it, right? And I have a pile of them. So I decided to dive into that pile and use some of them to cover my lanyards, which of course, made them scrappy. I only made five so far but have to make more, and will share them around. It did make me feel a little better, too, at least for a minute!
The lanyards now feel comfortable against my skin, too. So much more important right now than my WIPs!
Linking up to WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced for fun!
Hugs,
Debbie

Debbie, I am so sorry for this loss. It's wonderful that you are doing something positive for others who are also upset. I've never kept selvedges but have seen several posts from people who do. What you are doing is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteOh that's so horrible! I'm glad you were able to do something for you and your coworkers.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about losing your school, but this will be a great way for you to share memories with your fellow educators. And it's definitely a project worth sharing.
ReplyDeleteHow disappointing to hear about the school closing. It sounds like you have found a great way to give back to your friends and co-workers in a way that is very therapeutic for you as well.
ReplyDeleteI am so so sorry to hear this. Know that your contribution will never be diminished even with the closing of the school. These are a great way to carry the memories with you. They look great!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear that your school is closing, but this is such a great way of keeping the memory alive for yourself and others.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Kids always need something to hook something to! Wish they had them back in my day!
ReplyDeleteLove your lanyards, though I don't know if I could bear to part with that much of my selvedge stash! I'm sure your co-workers will appreciate the thought and effort that went into them!
