Aviatrix Border 5

Last night I arranged all the blocks for the fifth border on my Aviatrix quilt.  There are 40.  I had quite a bit of help supervision with the task at hand.

Kitty simply wants to know where I am at all times.

I am known for bright and busy quilts, but this quilt is most certainly bright and busy!

So far, the fifth row in this quilt has been my favorite, as I have long been enamored of log cabin blocks, and I love the way that Elizabeth mixed up the design to let the white fabric highlight the colors.

And border five complete.  A very busy  and colorful quilt indeed.  The next row is the butterfly row.  Ugh.  70 of them.  Double Ugh.  Any tips????   Hugs all around!!!

  1. This is gorgeous! I really really wish I was making this quilt right now, but there is no time! I love your color palette! Yum! How big does it measure before the butterflies? I need to make a quit for my father, and I think this could be really fun, but I don't think he'd appreciate the butterflies as much. :)

  2. Audrey, funny you should ask about the size. I measured it for you, and it is 67 inches square. I actually though about stopping here myself, due to my fears about the butterfly blocks. 67 inches is good for a lap quilt. What kind of fabrics would you use if you made it for your father?
I actually did make two butterfly blocks last night, and they are not really quilt-worthy at all. So I looked up a tutorial I remembered from Rita of Red Pepper Quilts, and hers is a little different but results in the same size block. I just ran out and bought the triangle ruler to try the block one last time. sigh!!! Thanks for your kind comment!

  3. Hi Deb, Your aviatrix quilt is fabulous! That is a lot of work!! I'm looking forward to seeing your butterfly blocks. Your little supervisor is pretty. We also have a calico and enjoy her at all times unless she's clawing something. It was nice visiting and I'll stop by again later.

  4. Love the fabrics you've chosen. Why not foundation piece the butterflies?

    1. Ah. I did not think of that! Did you see my last post on the two that I made last evening? It was rather discouraging to say the least. Not to be completely dense but do you have any idea at all where I would get a pattern for that? I have done some paper piecing, and I liked parts, but nothing too large.

  5. Your quilt is looking fab, I think your fabric print and colour choices are making it super special. I saw in your reply to Sue's comment above that you asked about foundation paper piecing patterns for the butterflies - hope it's not too late but here's one. I've read your other post about your difficult with the butterfly block, don't give up your quilt is going to be fabulous :D

  7. I LOVE the colors you've chosen! I've been on a total magenta and turquoise kick, and I was thinking I really need to make something in blues and greens. This may be a much larger project than I'm ready to take on at the moment, but the quilt is lovely!! AND pushing me along in that lovely direction of starting a *new* project. Just what I need, right?
